Hiking through a narrow slot canyon on sacred Navajo land, Brett and his guide approached a brightly lit section where the sandstone opened to the sky and the sun above illuminated a lonely plant. “The bush offered such great contrast to the sandstone canyon” recalls Brett. “It was an easy decision to photograph it. The light was perfect and the moment was fleeting so I had to act quickly. I setup my equipment, adjusted my settings and came home with a great shot.”
Photographed on an early summer morning along the coast of Lake Tahoe, Zen is a simple image that captivates many emotions. The calm water and smooth stones of this region of Western Nevada are a great contrast to the harsh deserts the state is known for. “The warm glow of sunrise was intensified by a slight haze.” recalls Brett. “I had spent several days visiting this spot, waiting for the perfect light. I was pleasantly surprised by the pinkish hues that presented themselves that morning. The calm water and still silence gave me a sense of peace as I framed my shot and captured Zen.”
Mystere is a dreamy photograph of a crystal clear river in a small slot canyon in Southern Utah. Brett was captivated by an unusual crack in the stone where water seemed to jet through it, carving it deeper and deeper. “I immediately saw the photograph in my mind. A cloud trapped between two stones.” recalls Brett. “I knew that with the right exposure I could turn the water into fog and at the same time capture the goldish reflection of the warm canyon walls above.” Being careful not to slip, Brett stabilized his tripod and captured the shot. The result is a magical image that can be displayed horizontally or vertically.
Hiking through the Teton National Forest, Brett came upon this beautiful meadow framed between jagged peaks and open prairies. “The weather was perfect. I remember a moose caught my attention in the distance which is why I stopped to take in this mellow creek. The moose decided to move on, but I stayed to capture the warm sunset.” recalls Brett. The soothing colors and rounded stones of the creek came together in a harmonious way.
Brett captured Sacred Falls on film in early autumn in the hills of North Carolina. This beautiful waterfall is relatively quiet during the late summer and early fall which gives it a tranquil feeling surrounded by golden leaves and the debris left over from the floods earlier in the springtime. “When I came upon this waterfall I was instantly captivated by it’s setting” recalls Brett. “It was framed on both sides with steep slopes and fallen leaves which gave peace to the chaos of the debris pool below.”
